Thoughts on Division of Responsibility, and a Flatwork Routine - New Horse Starter Pack with Chelsea Canedy Day 19

Chelsea Canedy

What's your responsibility, and what's your horse's?

It makes our lives easier as humans to know what falls under our umbrella, and what is someone else's. The same goes for your horse, and it's frustrating and confusing if the rules constantly change.

For instance, it's not fair or kind to your horse to allow her to be slow off your leg sometimes, but then be upset or sharp with her other times for the same reaction. Your horse's reactions to your aids cannot be deemed suitable or unsuitable based on your moods, or the day, or the weather, or where you are in your ride.

It's also incredibly important that if you issue your horse an aid, that after your horse gives you a response, you always return to neutral. Neutral energy, neutral body position, neutral emotions. Soften, and be curious.

Today for your ride, you'll be following the Guided Ride from Chelsea called: "Relaxing Flatwork Routine for a Low-Energy Day." This Guided Ride can be found in the "Guided Rides" folder/module of this Starter Pack.

It may not be a low energy day for you and your horse, but this ride is perfectly suited for a first day back to work after a day or two off. Proceed to the next lesson when you're reading (this Guided Ride is still a part of today's plan).

Journal Prompts:

  • What tendencies or habits do I notice my horse has after she has a day or two off of work? Is she her best self that day? Does she tend to do her best work a day or two into the week?

  • What kind of ride or groundwork should I plan to incorporate into my routine for the day after a break?

  • What kind of pre-ride meditation or ritual could I consider to re-focus myself after a day or two off?
